What are Assist and Point?

Learn the difference between Assist, where Rheo makes changes for you, and Point, where Rheo teaches you with on-screen walkthroughs. Formerly called Pointer Mode.

Assist and Point are the two ways Rheo can help you in Create. In Assist, Rheo makes changes to your project for you. In Point, Rheo teaches you how to make changes yourself, highlighting each control on screen as you go.

What is Assist?

In Assist, Rheo acts on your requests directly. Ask for "a delay on the vocals" and Rheo adds a delay to the vocals. Assist is the fastest option when you know what you want and just want it done.

If you ask a how-to question in Assist, Rheo answers in words. When an answer walks through Create's controls, Rheo offers a Show me how button, which switches to Point and shows you the same steps on screen.

What is Point?

In Point, you make the edits yourself while Rheo guides you. Ask for a change, like "add a delay", and Rheo starts a walkthrough instead of making the change. The switch turns green while Point is on.

Rheo in Point mode highlighting a control in Create during a walkthrough

During a Point walkthrough:

  • Rheo highlights one control at a time and tells you what to do with that control. If the control is in a closed panel or on another track, Rheo first shows you how to get there.

  • The walkthrough moves forward as soon as you complete each step. On steps where you try out options, such as sounds or presets, click Next when you're ready (or Done on the last step).

  • The chat lists every step as a numbered reference you can look back at.

  • Use the back arrow next to the walkthrough bubble's × to review earlier steps. Going back doesn't undo anything you made.

  • If a control isn't on screen, click Show me to bring the control back, or Skip this step to move on.

  • Click × or press Escape to close a walkthrough at any time.

Tip: Changed your mind partway through? The first bubble of every walkthrough has a Do it for me button, which switches to Assist and makes the change for you.

How do I switch between Assist and Point?

Use any of these options:

  • Click either side of the Assist / Point switch at the bottom left of the Rheo message box.

  • Press Shift+Tab while the Rheo panel is active.

  • Ask Rheo to switch, for example "switch to Assist".

You can also ask Rheo to do a single task for you without leaving Point. Say "do it for me" and Rheo makes just that change. The message is tagged Assist, and Point stays on.

Which mode do new users start in?

New users start in Point, so the first-run tour and Rheo's early answers teach you Create's controls as you go. You can switch to Assist whenever you like.

What are lessons in Point?

When you ask for something with several parts in Point, such as "make me a lo-fi hook", Rheo plans a lesson and shows a lesson card just above the message box. The card shows the lesson's title, how many steps it has, and a progress bar.

  • Click Start lesson to begin. Rheo walks you through each part in turn, starting with setting the tempo and key if needed.

  • When a part is in place, the section loops so you can hear the result. Click Continue to keep the part and move to the next one.

  • Sending Rheo a message or closing the pointer's bubble pauses the lesson. Click Resume to pick up again.

  • Hover over the lesson card and click × to end the lesson at any point.

Lessons are saved with your project, so when you reopen the project, the lesson card is right where you left it.

Can I use Point with the Learn Create lessons?

Yes. Learn Create's built-in lessons (Add a sample, Fill a region, Create a MIDI part, and Open devices) appear in the Getting started row above the message box once you finish the first-run tour. Click Start or Continue to run the remaining lessons, or click a single lesson to run just that lesson. Only one guide runs at a time: starting a Rheo lesson pauses a Learn Create lesson, and you can pick either one back up from its card.
