Splice INSTRUMENT for new music creators

Updated this week

If you’re coming to INSTRUMENT as your first introduction to music production, there may be some terminology that needs some clarification. This article hopes to clarify, but if you still have questions please reach out to support so that we can update this guide.

DAW

Short for “Digital Audio Workstation”, this is the software that producers use to create, arrange, edit, and mix their music.

Sample-based Virtual Instrument

This is a type of virtual instrument that uses recordings of real instruments to create a playable version of that instrument, right in your studio. We do this by working with real musicians to record a variety of performances with different playing styles and techniques, and then mapping those samples within a software musical instrument.

Presets and Packs

A Preset within a plugin like Splice INSTRUMENT is a specific configuration that contains a set of samples, with predefined effects in place. A pack is simply a collection of presets, usually centered around a specific theme or instrumental session.

Dynamics

How loud or soft an instrument is playing. This is distinct from Volume, but they are closely related.
