Why won't the Splice desktop app install on Windows?

Troubleshooting steps for when the Splice desktop app won’t install on Windows, including what to check if the installer fails or your antivirus blocks it.

If the Splice desktop app won’t install on your Windows PC, or the installer fails with an error, work through the fixes below in order.

Check your Windows version

The Splice desktop app needs a recent version of Windows to install correctly.

After updating Windows, restart your PC and try the installer again.

Download and run the MSIX installer

  1. Download the .msix installer. This is the recommended option because it keeps the app updated automatically.

  2. Open the downloaded file and follow the installer prompts.

When the install finishes, Splice appears in your Start menu and opens normally.

Use the .zip installer as a temporary workaround

If the .msix installer fails, the .zip version of the Splice desktop app will get you up and running while you troubleshoot.

  1. Download the .zip option and extract the folder.

  2. Open the extracted folder and run the Splice app.

Note: The .zip version of the Splice desktop app does not auto-update and expires after 45 days. To keep using it, re-download the latest .zip from the same page and reinstall.

Check for antivirus or firewall interference

Antivirus programs such as Avast, CCleaner, and Bitdefender, as well as network firewalls, can block the Splice installer.

  1. Temporarily disable your antivirus software or firewall.

  2. Run the Splice installer again.

  3. If the install succeeds, re-enable your antivirus and add Splice to its exceptions or allow list.

Install the latest Microsoft .NET Framework

The Splice desktop app relies on Microsoft .NET Framework. If it’s missing or outdated, the installer may fail.

  1. Download the latest version from Microsoft .NET Framework downloads.

  2. Install it, restart your PC, and run the Splice installer again.

Try installing in Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Networking disables third-party software that may be blocking the installation.

  1. Follow Microsoft’s instructions to start your PC in Safe Mode and choose Safe Mode with Networking.

  2. Run the Splice installer.

  3. Restart your PC normally.

If the install works in Safe Mode, the problem is almost certainly caused by antivirus, firewall, or background software on your PC. Review those programs and add Splice to their exceptions.
