Why won’t the Splice desktop app open on Windows?

Fixes for the Splice desktop app not launching or loading properly on Windows, including the “Hold up, something’s not right...” error.

If the Splice desktop app won’t open or load properly on your Windows PC, or you see the “Hold up, something’s not right...” error when you launch it, work through the steps below in order.

1. Check your internet connection and VPN

  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection.

  • If you’re using a VPN or proxy, temporarily disable it and try opening Splice again.

  • If possible, connect to a different Wi‑Fi network or a mobile hotspot to rule out a network issue.

2. Temporarily disable security software

Antivirus and security apps can block Splice from launching or connecting.

Temporarily disable any third-party security software, such as Avast, Kaspersky, or Bitdefender, and pause Windows Defender’s real-time protection. Then try opening Splice again.

Important: If disabling the software isn’t enough and you decide to uninstall it, make sure you have the product key and installer so you can reinstall it after troubleshooting.

3. Free up disk space and unplug extra hardware

  • Make sure your PC has enough free space for Splice to install, update, and launch.

  • Disconnect any external devices you don’t need, such as external drives, docks, and other peripherals, then try opening Splice again.

4. Repair hard drive errors

Errors on your drive can prevent Splice from reading its own files.

  1. Click the Start button and type Command Prompt.

  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the results and select Run as administrator.

  3. In the Command Prompt window, type chkdsk /f C: and press Enter.

  4. If Windows asks to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y and press Enter.

  5. Restart your PC. Windows repairs the drive during startup, which may take several minutes.

5. Delete the existing Splice app files

Leftover or corrupted app files can stop Splice from launching. Removing them gives the next reinstall a clean start.

Important: Before continuing, copy any sample files you’ve modified in the Splice desktop app to a different location on your PC. Modified samples stored in these folders are permanently deleted and can’t be recovered.

  1. Quit Splice if it’s running. If it won’t close, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), select Splice, and click End task.

  2. Open File Explorer, paste %localappdata% into the address bar, and press Enter. This opens C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local.

  3. Delete the following folders if they exist:

    • Splice

    • SpliceSettings

    • SquirrelTemp

  4. Delete any remaining copy of splice.exe on your PC, including any shortcut on your desktop or in your Downloads folder.

6. Reinstall the Splice desktop app

  1. Download the latest installer from splice.com/download.

  2. Run the installer and follow the prompts.

  3. Open Splice.

7. Restart your PC in Safe MOde

If Splice still won’t open, restart your PC and try again. If that doesn’t work, start your PC in Safe Mode and try opening Splice there. If Splice launches in Safe Mode, another program on your PC is likely interfering with it.
