If the Splice desktop app won’t install on your Mac, or the installer fails with an error, work through the fixes below in order.
Check your macOS version
The Splice desktop app requires macOS 12 or later. Splice can’t guarantee that the app will install or run on older versions.
To check your version, open the Apple menu and select About This Mac.
If you update macOS, restart your Mac and try installing Splice again.
Check that you’re using an administrator account
The Splice desktop app needs to be installed from a Mac user account with administrator privileges. Standard and guest accounts can’t install Splice.
To check your account type:
Open System Settings > Users & Groups. On macOS 12, open System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Find your username and check whether your account is listed as Admin.
If you’re using a standard or guest account, sign in to an administrator account and try installing Splice again.
Download a fresh installer
An incomplete or outdated download can prevent Splice from installing.
Delete any previous copies of the Splice installer, including files named
splice.dmg.Download a new installer from splice.com/download.
Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions.
Check for antivirus or network interference
Antivirus programs and network monitoring tools, such as Little Snitch, can block the Splice download or installer.
Check whether your security software is blocking Splice, and allow the download or installation if needed. Then try the installer again.
For step-by-step instructions, see What should I do if my antivirus is interfering with the Splice app?
Check your Mac’s security settings
If macOS blocks the installer because of your download settings:
Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and scroll to Security. On macOS 12, open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.
Under Allow apps downloaded from or Allow applications from, check that App Store and identified developers is selected. You may need to enter your administrator password to change this setting.
Try opening the installer again.
Reinstall Splice if an update keeps failing
If Splice says it’s out of date but the update won’t install, try a fresh installation.
Download the latest installer from splice.com/download.
Fully uninstall Splice before reinstalling by dragging the application to the trash. Don’t run the new installer over the existing app.
Restart your Mac.
Run the new installer, then open Splice.
If the update message returns, click Splice in the menu bar and select Check for updates.
If the message continues to appear, contact Support and include the version number shown in the message.
Try installing from a new administrator account
If the installer still fails, create a new Mac user account with administrator privileges and try installing Splice there.
If installation works in the new account, the issue is likely related to your original user account. Let Support know the result so we can help with the next steps.
