Can I use my Serum 1 presets in Serum 2?

This article explains compatibility of Serum 1 presets, ratings, wavetables, and noise files with Serum 2, and how to consolidate your preset folders.

Please note: Serum 2 presets are not backwards compatible with Serum 1 and cannot be loaded in Serum 1.

Steps

  1. Launch Serum 2 and open the preset browser. Your Serum 1 presets should appear automatically. Any ratings you applied to Serum 1 presets within Serum 1 transfer the first time you launch Serum 2.

  2. (Optional) If you no longer need Serum 1, move your Serum 1 presets to the Serum 2 preset folder:

    • macOS: ~/Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/Serum 2 Presets/Presets/User

    • Windows: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\Documents\Xfer\Serum 2 Presets\Presets\User

The presets now appear from the Serum 2 preset folder.

Serum 2 includes all Serum 1 wavetables and noise files, so you don’t need to move or reinstall them.

Troubleshooting / Limitations

  • Serum 2 presets cannot be loaded in Serum 1. This includes any presets you create or modify in Serum 2.

  • Only ratings applied to Serum 1 presets within Serum 1 transfer, and they transfer only the first time you launch Serum 2.

  • Projects that use Serum 1 do not update to Serum 2 automatically. This is intentional, so you can update each track manually and confirm it sounds as intended.

  • You can keep using Serum 1 after you activate Serum 2, and both versions can be installed on the same system. Xfer Records recommends migrating to Serum 2, because Serum 1 has reached end-of-life and won’t receive fixes or new features.

  • Serum 2 uses the same or less CPU than Serum 1 for equivalent patches. Some new Serum 2 features, and presets that use them, may need more processing power.

  • If your presets don’t appear in the Serum 2 preset browser, see Fix for Serum presets not showing up in Serum.
