How do I save, open, and recover Create projects?

How to save and open Create projects, what a project file contains, and how to recover unsaved work after a crash.

Create projects are saved as .splicex files on your Mac. This article covers saving and opening projects, what a project contains, and how to recover unsaved work after a crash.

Save a project

  1. Press Cmd+S.

  2. If the project has never been saved, a Save As window opens. Enter a name for the project, choose where to save the project, and confirm.

The project's name appears in the top bar. A project that has never been saved shows Untitled.splicex. While you have unsaved changes, the window title ends with an asterisk (*).

Tip: You can also ask Rheo to "save the project". Rheo saves to the project's current file, or asks for a name if the project has never been saved. Rheo only saves when you ask.

What's saved in a project

A saved project restores your tracks, clips, sections, devices, automation, sampler settings, and Rheo chat history. When you save, Create removes audio the project no longer uses so the project file doesn't grow unnecessarily.

Find your project file

Choose File → Show Project in Finder to open the folder containing your .splicex file. The option is unavailable until the project has been saved at least once.

Open a project

Open a project from the File menu, or double-click a .splicex file in Finder.

If your current project has unsaved changes, Create asks what to do first: Save, Don't Save, or Cancel. If the save fails, Create cancels opening the other project so you don't lose work.

To have Create reopen your last project every time you launch Create, go to Settings → General and turn on Always load last session.

Recover unsaved work after a crash

If Create crashed or was force-quit with unsaved changes, Create shows a Create quit unexpectedly message the next time you launch. The message tells you when the autosave was made.

  • Restore autosave brings your changes back. The restored changes are still unsaved, so press Cmd+S to save them.

  • Open saved project opens the project as it was last saved, without the autosaved changes. For a project that was never saved, this button reads Discard autosave.

If you quit without choosing an option, Create keeps the autosave and asks again on the next launch.

What happens if you're logged out

If you're logged out while working, for example when your login expires, Create keeps your open project and undo history behind a sign-in screen. Log back in to continue where you left off. The sign-in screen also offers Save project so you can save your work first.

Note: If you choose Log out yourself, logging back in starts a new project. If you have unsaved changes, Create asks about them before you log out.

Start a new project

Start a new project from the File menu, or ask Rheo to "start a new song". If your current project has unsaved changes, Create offers to save them first.

When your song is finished, see How do I export music from Create?
