How do I fix Serum 2 license and authorization errors?

Troubleshoot Serum 2 license verification and authorization errors, including issues with active Rent-to-Own plans, owned licenses, and machine activations.

If Serum 2 is asking you to verify or authorize your license, or refresh your license through Splice, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Note: If you're looking to upgrade from Serum to Serum 2, see How Serum users can upgrade to Serum 2.

First, check your Serum Rent-to-Own lease status

Go to your Splice plans page and find your Serum Rent-to-Own plan. Your plan will show one of the following statuses:

  • Active: You're still making Rent-to-Own payments. Your Serum 2 license is verified through Splice. Splice plans page showing a Serum Rent-to-Own subscription with an Active status, indicating that payments are still ongoing.

  • Owned: You've completed your Rent-to-Own payments. Your Serum 2 license is managed through Xfer Records.Splice plans page showing a Serum Rent-to-Own subscription with an Owned status, indicating that all payments have been completed.

Follow the instructions for your plan status below.

I am still renting Serum (Active)

If you're still renting Serum, please refresh your license connection through the Splice desktop app:

  1. Completely quit the Splice desktop app.

  2. Quit out of your DAW.

  3. Reopen Splice and log in to the account associated with your active Serum Rent-to-Own plan.

  4. Open your DAW and launch Serum 2 to check whether the licensing error is resolved.

If the error continues:

  1. Confirm that your Serum Rent-to-Own plan is active and your payments are up to date on your Splice plans page.

  2. Close your DAW and reinstall Serum 2 from the Apps & Plugins section of the Splice desktop app.

  3. Reinstall the latest version of the Splice desktop app.

  4. Log out of Splice, then log back in to refresh your license.

  5. Reopen your DAW and launch Serum 2.

Note: Antivirus software, firewalls, or VPNs may interfere with license verification. Make sure Splice and Serum 2 can connect to the internet.

I have paid off Serum (Owned)

Once you've completed your Serum Rent-to-Own payments, your lifetime license is managed directly through Xfer Records rather than Splice.

To authorize Serum 2:

  1. Log in to your Xfer Records account using the email address associated with your original Serum Rent-to-Own plan.

  2. Download Serum 2 from Xfer Records.
